2nd Annual MD Class of ‘06 Golf Scramble

I’m looking for the name, or exact rules for a Scramble format in which each team is given a colored ball. That ball is rotated between players after each shot, and if the colored ball lie is used each time, the team can subtract a stroke. So it has to be the shot chosen to play from each time someone hits it. It was fun when I played it once, as there may be a better ball out there, but you try the colored ball with the hopes of subtracting that stroke. Anyone heard of this format, or know what it’s called?

In the NorthEast it’s called Razz Ball. I’ve played it differently than you have. In our format the ball rotates to a different player in the foursome for every hole. That player plays only that ball on his razz ball holes and the team that plays the razz ball for the most holes wins whatever prize was established for razz ball. It’s almost always lost during the round but we actually shot a team 77 on razz ball. That’s a rarity. Razz ball is normally a tournament within the main tournament.

Two, three of four players form a team. One person is designated captain (usually the best player). Everybody hits off the first tee. The captain chooses one ball and everybody else picks up and goes to that ball to hit their next shot. That process is repeated for all 18 holes on every shot including the putting green. This format is usually used to compete against other teams in a tournament or for some form of wagering event.

In best ball, each person plays their own ball and the one with the lowest score is counted for the hole.

In a scramble, each person takes their turn hitting the ball but the players choose which ball to hit next (some of the factors are longest distance, best position for approach shot, etc.). Each player then hits their next shot from that spot. This continues until the ball is in the hole. Score is how many shots it took to reach the hole.

I recently played in a 4 man scramble at the Four Seasons in Dallas Texas. This is the TPC course played during the Byron Nelson Tournament. Anyone who volunteered at the tournament was able to participate in the best ball scramble. The winning team consisting of 2 women and 2 men supposed shot a 51 on the par 70 course. Just seems a little fishy to me. Making a birdie on every hole except the one they eagled!! Come on that is a little far fetched. I’m just curious how low the scores usually drop during a scramble. This was the first I have ever played in. Definitely fun, but a little disappointing at the end when the scores are read out.

I DON’T THINK ANYONE HAS TURNED IN A TRUTHFUL SCRAMBLE SCORE CARD IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME. I HAVE PLAYED IN MANY AND HAVE SEEN SCORES AS LOW AS 53, THE HONESTY OF GOLF GOES AWAY IN A SCRAMBLE, THEY JUST WANT TO WIN…

tee off with something square like a little box or someting putt with a wiffel ball those practice golf balls with the holes in them. sounds like fun!

yee haw.

Shotgun start – you have 144 players two groups start on each hole at the same time. That way everyone will finish at the same time. So if your group is 8B. You will start on hole 8 and your group tees of second behind group 8A. Your last hole will be hole 7.

Scramble – I always joke around and say I play one man scramble. Everyone on the team hits, the team picks which shot they like best. The other players pick up their balls and everyone hits second shot from that spot. Sometimes the event has requirements like each person must hit at least two drives that the team plays. One thing to remember when you play scramble is once the ball goes in the hole the hole is over. That means if your the first person to put for a 3 and you end up an inch away from the hole. You must mark it, because if you putt it out the hole is over with a score of 4.
