What is Parimutuel betting in golf?
I am going to be in a golf tournament this weekend and they will be having parimutuel betting. It is a 3-man scramble with 40 teams in total. I am just wondering if someone could clearly explain what parimutuel betting in golf is so I know what to expect come the weekend.
Thanks in advance
Dear Tact6, You have to imagine the Kentucky Derby with a 40 horse field. The difference is that there are no established odds on any of the 40 teams. The person(s) in charge of the PM betting will in most cases use betting amounts to establish pay out values. I assume you are playing with teams of whom you have no knowledge of their strength or weakness.
A club I once belonged to had a Calcutta each year with PM betting on the side. One year I believe the pool after auctioning the teams came to well over $50,000.00. 50% went to the winning team of four players. The PM was based on money bet on a team. In your case, teams 1-40 will have X amount of dollars bet on each team. This establishes the pay out by the percentage of the entire PM pool a particular team has bet on them. Call it track odds. You can win a great deal of money since you can bet a win-place-show and you have 40 teams to bet with so if it’s sophisticted to the point where picking the top two teams and top three teams even has higher pay outs just like the horse track has exacta and perfecta pay outs.
A word of common sense. If this is a fund raiser and a friendly outing most players bet on their own team first. What does it say about a team when you don’t believe in your own group. Now, a railbird will boo hoo that as emotional betting but think of it as pragmatic. What have you got to lose? Plus, the house, charity gets a flat percentage of 17% to 20% of the total PM pool money.
You mentioned a week-end. If this is a two day event then be prepared to make a Saturday and Sunday bet along with a week-end total bet. Like a Nassau bet, 3 ways, front-back-total. Expect to have fun by making a bunch of $2.00 bets along with betting your team win-place and show.
There are variations of PM betting. When you register go to the PM betting table and they will be happy to explain the ground rules. Use your knowledge of horse betting as a rough guide since you won’t have odds. Most of all have fun!
Is it okay to play best ball golf when you’re not actually in a Texas Scramble tournament?
I’m going golfing with my hubby tomorrow. We used to go a handful of times a year (started about 6 years ago) but then I was pregant & it’s tough to get a sitter for a newborn early on a Sunday morning… so we never played for the past few years.
I’ve been 2x this year. I love it! I forgot how fun it was!! We were never GOOD (I only drive like 100-140 yds so we play the local par 3 courses mostly – usually 9-holes and we score like 45-50 with a 10-second rule in play and a couple mutually agreed upon do-overs when we both mess up
I like the walk & being outdoors & the challenge of pulling the right club & then actually having a decent shot with it. I like the practice. In several years time maybe we WILL be better at it. We’re thinking we should both go take a lesson or two.
My question: if it’s just the 2 of us, playing for fun & we both agree, could we play a best ball game or is that weird? Would it be strange seeing 2 beginners playing best ball on a course?
Thanks!
sure
How can I receive free promotional items for a golf tournament?
I am setting up a scramble the day before my wedding and would love to be able to have a few small items donated as prizes for closest to the pin and long drive contests. Any suggestions?
You mave a hard time considering its for a wedding and not a charity. Just call places and ask. I’m a pro at a golf course. I usually give free green fees, cart not included.
Hello From Orlando- Part 20: The Walking Hall Of Fame Of The PGA Father Son Challenge At ChampionsGate
After our exciting round at Mystic Dunes, it was only mid-afternoon on a gorgeous day with blue skies, so we decided to take a 10 minute drive and drop in on the Father Son Challenge at Champion’s Gate, which has been held for the last 3 years at this golf course in the South part of Orlando. You can’t miss Champion’s Gate, when you first get off exit 58 on the I-4, the impressive main entrance gates to Champion’s Gate are right there.
The Father Son Legend is truly a walking Hall of Fame of Golf, and it’s a celebration of the sport as well as of the bonds of family. Famous golf professionals of the present and the past play with their talented sons and daughters, and all of them share a passion for the game.
This year’s line-up included Jack and Jackie Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and his grandson Sam Saunders, Vijay Singh and 15 year old son Qass, Mark and Shaun O’Meara, Craig and Chris Stadler, Bob and David Charles, Raymond and Robert Floyd (Raymond has won the Father Son Challenge 5 times since 1994 together with his sons Robert and Raymond Jr.), Hale and Steve Irwin, Tom and David Kite, Bernard and 15 year old Stefan Langer, Davis Love III and his 12-year old son Dru, Johnny Miller and Johnny Miller II, Larry and Josh Nelson, Curtis and Tom Strange, Lee and Daniel Trevino, Fuzzy Zoeller and his daughter Gretchen.
We parked our car and approached the club house. Just as we were walking towards the stands on the 18th hole, Davis Love III had finished his round and was coming towards the club house. It is really an amazing experience, seeing all these world famous celebrities and icons of the sport, up so close and so relaxed in this unique tournament format.
The rules of playh are based on a Scramble Format, which means that on each hole, each player drives and the best drive is selected. Each player then plays a second shot from the spot where the selected drive lies, and the best second shot is selected. This process is completed uniti the hole is completed.
When we were there we also saw golf greats like Vijay Singh, Mark O’Meara and Lee Trevino finish their rounds. It was great seeing Vijay, relaxing after his final putt with a coffee in hand, awaiting the arrival of his son on the last hole and watching his son’s last putt of the day. Because this tournament pairs up the great players of golf with their sons or daughters, it really gives you a much better feeling of these professionals as human beings, and according to Allan Findley, General Manager of Champions Gate, many of these players truly relish this event, which allows them to celebrate their sport as a family away from the pressures of the PGA Tour.
We really enjoyed the atmosphere at the Father Son Challenge, and it would have been great to see some of the other legends of golf, like Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, in person. Unfortunately we have an extremely tight schedule and will be unable to come back on a second day, but it was a great experience, getting a first person look at this “Walking Hall of Fame” of the game of golf.

What is a blind handicap in a golf tournament?
This is a 4 man scramble and the brochure mentions that players will establish a blind handicap.
It means that the partipants don’t know each other’s handicap until the tournament has ended and the scores are tallied.
Tips On Buying Your First Set Of Golf Clubs
Before buying your very first set of golf clubs, keep these important ideas and tips in mind.
First, try to understand how often you will be playing the game. If your only intention is to play a couple of times a year in the company scramble or better ball, then it is probably best to stick with a cheaper set of golf clubs, rather than spending a ton of cash on a brand new set of clubs. But if you’ve tried the game and enjoy it and feel that you want to take it up more often you should do a little research and determine which golf clubs are best for you.
Your level of interest, dedication, time and of course cash flow are important factors in how many times you’ll be getting out on the golf course. If you’re not sure what these levels are, then you should probably look for a cheaper set of clubs or even some second-hand clubs. They will work out the best for a new player who is testing out their enjoyment in the world of golf. If your interest continues to grow, you can always buy a new set of clubs down the road and by then you would probably have a better understanding of your game and commitment.
If at first you are not sure what type of clubs you should buy, then you can ask and see what other people or friends who have some understanding of the game think will suit you best. Try asking the friends who like to play golf and who have probably been with you on your first or second outing. They would be able to point you in the right direction, especially if they’ve seen you play. Or ask at your local pro shop and see what they would recommend for you. Asking people who play the game is the best way to get ideas for which set of golf clubs could be the best fit for you.
Once you narrow down the search you can always test drive the golf clubs at your local dealer to get a feel for what you’re buying and to see if they are the best possible clubs for your swing and the level of player you are. Two tips I feel are important for anyone looking to buy a beginner set of golf clubs is; look for perimeter weighted golf clubs instead of forged blades this will help with forgiveness on off center shots and help you enjoy the game. Also try and pick up graphite shafts instead of steel shafts, this will limit the amount of feedback or vibrations on shots you miss hit and also help you enjoy the game more. Once you have your swing and are comfortable enough to know what you want and see an improvement in your game, then see about some higher end clubs.
After you make your decision, check out a few discount dealers, pro shops or even some local garage sales. You can get a decent set of new starter golf clubs for $200 or $300 from a discount golf shop or maybe a better set of clubs for a lot less from someone’s garage. Heck they might even throw in a golf bag and some golfing accessories you’ll probably need.
Finally and most importantly, enjoy the game and the score will come!

Does this make sense to you: 4- person scramble concert kickoff?
I’m re-creating an invitation I made for class and I’m gathering my copy. I’m creating a golf invitation and the people are invited to a 4-person scramble concert kick-off?
Does that make sense to you? I’m trying to let the invitees know that before the game there will be a concert for them to enjoy.
It wasn’t clear until you explained it. How about "4-person scramble with pre-game concert?" Or "live concert followed by a 4-person scramble." I assume that the invitees are all golfers so they know what a scramble is.
